Mexican Spatial Collective, Ulises I

Conformed by eleven contemporary composers, musicians and electronic digital artists, the Colectivo Espacial Mexicano have been working together to launch a satellite with a Spatial Opera. The object of the project is the process more than the piece itself (Duchamp).

Ulises I is the name of the satellite in honor of Ulises Carrión (artist and magazine editor of Efímera) but they enjoy the fact it can also be related to Ulises from Joyce´s Oddysey because in the end a satellite is a trasmitter or a voyager.

Eleven is the number of the artists in the collective because that´s the number of players in a soccer team:
Arcángel Constantini
Iván Puig
Arturo Márquez
Ramsés Luna
Marcela Armas
Gilberto Esparza
Omar Gasca
Cabezas de Cera
Ariel Guzik
Hugo Solís
Francisco Rivas

The director of the project is Juan José Díaz Infante and every project ranges from intricate to very simple, from material to really abstract but the main idea was to mark the beginning of a new era where imaginary worlds can be created by private sectors. Then, the notion of future, fantasy, play and exploration was the frame for this compliation of projects. Of course there are engineers involved in this project and institutions working towards imagination.

Now, if you are to launch a satellite into space, you need space in a rocket and apparently where  you find that is in the Mojave Desert. The deployment of the rocket is planned for this year from the Tonga Kingdom Spatial Port.

If I understood correctly, after 3 months of paperwork, they have also gotten clearance from The Pentagon.

Here´s a presentation of the project at the Arizona State University.

Now my two cents of reflection. In a month I have been aware of the level of violence that a city like mine exudes. Pemex Tower exploded, a group of Spanish tourists were raped in Acapulco, a series of mexican pederast priests have made terrible crimes and very recently incarcerations of political figures are creating a new power void which I´m sure, create a new set of turmoils.

All this in a month. Juan José Díaz is right: Where is the notion of future in a country when you live day by day? But this project has made me conscious of what I need to do with my project. I need the help of institutions and private sectors, I need to figure a way to make things happen and "change the conversation" because if these eleven artists are launching a satellite to space then there is hope. Hope in organization, hope in the reliance of effort, of pushing a car that has no gas to the top of a hill with a bunch of believers until you get to see it speeding down.
