CHILENITY
There's a geographical thing that as a country has limited us. And what I mean, to be surrounded by a large chain of mountains, to inhabit a very accidental geography, with snow, desert, where nothing is permanent, because at any moment in time an earthquake is produced, a seaquake or a volcanic outburst that ruins everything. No doubt, these characteristics have made a mark on us as individuals, and has influenced this strict mentality, a unilateral way to see things, something really provincial. To me it's really hard to see how chileans get into debt, for example, to pay some expensive vacations, or to buy those big cars or technological products. This clearly shows a lack of sense and desperation to seek for happiness through material goods. [...]
But just as well, there are beautiful things, like the fact in our country, the 70% of college students are the first generation of their families that have managed to get higher education. This is shocking, a reality that will surely generate cultural shifts in a few years. [...] As a matter of fact, we're already beginning to see, through the social mobilisations, that account for a more aware, awakened and belligerent population, an even more critical mass upon the decisions of the private sector and the authorities.
