According to the otomí welcome, depending on what elements are used for the necklaces, it carries a meaning. Ours had fruit, vegetables and flowers on them, meaning they will provide, spiritual aid and care for us from now on. Inciense is used to open the invisible doors with their ancestors, a kind of smoky Skype to the ancient ones.
Ethnography is such delicate tool and can only take you so far. The remaining 80% is all about really caring for other people. And in the end, everything you collect and design for the event, just evidences how much every cosmogony is valid. If, any of us were questioned about our ways, we would surely show the same amount of uncertain answers, but also it would definitely raise a considerable number of inquiries into our daily habits and periodic rituals. A few examples might include: our relationship with mobiles, our complaints when a rarity like cold water hits our showers (when in contrast, some people don't even have running water in their homes).
On my way back, I was drained. Slept the whole two hours on the bus ride. It is always me who learns, it is us who reconnect to some forgotten heritage, it is we that laugh together ignoring the differences that initially might separate us.
