Ángel Parra, Salvador Allende

How could I forget about Allende? Coming here and talking about him with people that lived here has been eye opening. I didn't know he was such good friends with our former president Echeverría. I guess nothing in politics (or in life) is really black or white. Democracy seems like trying to rescue a white flag from a pile of shit.

"Yes, there were killings from the Pinochet era, but things got better." Someone said yesterday, "So I guess yes, we're Pinochetistas, but things were not great at Allende's government either. Military came into your house and if you had a spare room, they sent people to live with you. People spent hours in the middle of the winter, trying to get something to eat on long lines of people and sometimes went back, with nothing on their hands to feed their kids."
