Talking to some friends the other night, they were saying how there was actually no exact word in the German dictionary to express something that means closer in terms of a good acquaintance. They explained to me that it was either a very corny and sweet (meine liebe schatz) or incredibly cold in case you needed to define someone you really like, aside for him / her to be just OK (sympatisch).

Coincidentally, the day after, I was watching a documentary about the Egyptians and how they lacked in their vocabulary a word for religion although they were in fact a religious based civilisation. So does the Lakota Native American Indians, who don't have a word for goodbye.

This made me think about not having a specific word for a want or need that you lacked defining because you were not familiar to it, or because in your cultural background it didn't exist as such. Then, for certain circumstances, living abroad and finding out, that all this time, you were missing that word, that specific word that allowed you to baptise that phenomena, want or need for the first time.
